Anne Lister's real diaries ran to some five million words β about a sixth of them in a secret code recording her love affairs. Sally Wainwright's HBO/BBC drama, built on those decoded pages, won the RTS Award for Best Drama and earned BAFTA nominations. Suranne Jones swaggers through the lead, and viewer response was strong enough to spawn a documentary about lives it changed.
